Dispatches from Cotopaxi

by Amy on May 7, 2013

Big time mountaineering season is in full swing. Out in the Himalayas everyone is jockeying for position to summit Everest and stand on top of the world. Down in the Andes Mountains another exciting summit bid is shaping up. Two members of Trailblazer Central are in Ecuador getting ready to scale the world’s highest active volcano, Cotopaxi.

Towering up to 19,393ft, Cotopaxi is the crown jewel of the stunning Cotopaxi National Park. Cotopaxi looks just like many children draw mountains to look like; rising up from the valley floor in a seemingly perfect symmetrical shape. The summit doesn’t come to a point since this still active volcano has a summit crater a few hundred feet deep. The upper flanks of the volcano are covered by glaciers year round making this a technical climb involving belaying across snow bridges and climbing around crevasses.

Whenever possible, Chris and Shelby Howe will be checking in with us to give updates on their progress and experience. They weather hasn’t been great down there for the past few weeks. Fingers crossed that things will clear up for some good climbing. Over the weekend we got our first check in:

So, we decided to do some extra pre-trip training before we meet with our group on Friday.  Today…Cotopaxi to 16,600 ft to the start of the glacier.  The air is thin up here but all is well and we made it without much trouble. –Chris

Here are a few pictures Chris sent along of the extra training they did.

Graffiti in Our Parks

by Amy April 18, 2013 Camp

I love going out on hikes in the woods. You feel like you are being one with nature. Unfortunately an ugly trend seems to be occurring more frequently, graffiti. In the last few weeks I have been reading about sections of Joshua Tree National Park in California having to be shut down because of [...]

I obviously went. Here are our exploits, most related to (and a few distinctly separate from) the wonderful sport of [...]

A Professional Climbers Broken Confidence

by TonyDasilva January 25, 2013 Climb

By: Paige Claassen Confidence is a rarity in the climbing world. Many may disagree, using blogs and shirtless macho’s in gyms as counter evidence. However, perhaps these things are signs of egos, which in fact lack confidence. I know I’m guilty of more than one of the aforementioned offenses. It’s not that these things are always bad, but they often turn [...]

The Rules of Dirtbag Dating

by TonyDasilva January 10, 2013 Climb

It’s a singular feeling when you’re 33 and talking to your mother and she says, “You know what I think you should try? Match.com.” Then there’s another feeling when you say to your mother, “Well, Mom, I had this weird feeling about meeting women and telling them I live in a van full of climbing gear, [...]

by TonyDasilva January 3, 2013 Camp
Thumbnail image for 5 Alternative Uses for Dental Floss in the Outdoors

Believe it or not, plain old dental floss has many uses aside from teeth cleaning. When you think about it, it actually makes sense. Because it has to fit in tight, abrasive spaces, floss is made of very strong nylon fibers. If you’ve ever tried to pull off a section of dental floss without the [...]

On a (luckily empty) Croatian highway, slackliner Faith Dickey battled wind gusts,  a rapidly approaching tunnel entrance and the threat of certain death as she walked between two speeding trucks on a slackline.
