New Music Monday: Po’ Girl
This week’s New Music Monday feature is a fabulous “urban roots” band called Po’ Girl. It’s tough to come up with a specific description of the Po’ Girl sound because this talented group seems to reinvent themselves with every song. Rich vocal harmonies and an incredible range of traditional-to-very-unique instruments are the delivery vehicles of their deeply meaningful, sometimes joyous, sometimes heart-warming, sometimes heart-breaking songs.
The band members, Allison Russell, Awna Teixeira, Benny Sidelinger, jump effortlessly between gutbucket bass, accordion, clarinet, banjo, dobro, guitar, to electric bass, glockenspiel, piano, harmonica, bicycle bells, drums…not always played by the same band member each time. Self-proclaimed gypsies, this band is constantly out on the road (250-300 days a year) to bring their music to an ever growing faithful following across the United States and beyond. Be sure to check out the band’s website to find out when they will be near you next…you won’t want to miss them!
Their newest CD “Follow Your Bliss” has just recently been released, and I’m proud to say I’ve just purchased my own copy via CD Baby. Loving every second of it, & hoping you’ll give it a listen too. There are some really great videos to check out on their website (my fave is “Kiss Me In The Dark” live on Dutch TV), and here’s one they’ve got uploaded to their YouTube channel that features a great interview & montage of many songs during a performance at Blue Rock Studio in Wimberley, TX.

I’ll be enjoying them this coming Sunday at Venue Music Bar in Freeport, ME…if you are out there & happen to catch them, let’s compare notes…feel free to leave your thoughts on the band below in the post comments!
