Shoreline Greenway Trail’s Fall “First Saturdays” Hike & Bike

Join members of the four Shoreline Greenway Trail Town Teams as they lead monthly walks and recreational bike rides along the Greenway Trail and other nearby areas. The events take place on the first Saturday of the month and are free and open to the public. Walkers please remember to wear sturdy shoes, leashed dogs are welcomed, and bicyclists need helmets.

September 7 10AM Branford

Stoney Creek to Guilford town line: We will walk the trail over the Land Trust’s beautiful Weill property, including the new boardwalk over Jarvis Creek. Continuing onto Yale’s property, Leader Chet Blomquist will explain the significance of the large glacial erratic located near the railroad crossing as well as the issues involved in siting the Trail in this area. Meet at West Point Field parking lot, Stoney Creek, at 9:50AM. This walk is not suitable for baby strollers. For more information call Judy 203-481-3870

October 5 10AM Madison

Bike ride along shoreline: Madison’s Police department is partnering with the Shoreline Greenway Trail Madison Team Ginny & Ted Raff to lead a pleasant 15-mile bike ride with a few hills, along Madison’s beautiful shoreline, including a short stretch on the completed section of the Shoreline Greenway Trail at Hammonasset. With police escort, you can ride the roads of Madison without traffic concerns! Meet at 9:45AM at Memorial Town Hall parking lot, Boston Post Road just west of Route 79. November 2 10AM Guilford

Hike on Menunkatuck Trail. Following up on his April First Saturday Walk, Team Leader Milton Charlton will explore the continuation of the recently-blazed Menunkatuck Trail (part of the New England Scenic Trail) heading north from East River Preserve. Be prepared for rocky, uneven trails and stream crossings. Meet at the end of Sullivan Drive, Guilford, at the parking area for East River Preserve, just before the gate to the Stump Dump. Bike ride to Indian Neck, Branford. Join Shoreline Greenway Trail leaders Ted Braun and Terry & Martha Maguire on a 23-mile bike ride from the Guilford Green along picturesque Route 146 to Indian Neck and return along the shore. Ride departs at 10AM. May divide into a ‘fast’ and ‘leisure’ group, depending on speed and comfort. Helmets required. Meet at 9:45AM at the Guilford Green opposite Town Hall on Park Street, to sign release waivers. For more information call Terry 203-214-4744.

December 7 10AM East Haven

Hike through picturesque woods with Shoreline Greenway Trail leaders Barbara Brow and Mike Gambardella from DC Moore School to Branford Preserve tidal wetlands, along our 1200ft granite-topped trail completed in April to our new Trailhead parking lot, across to Farm River State Park, peaceful and pristine. Osprey nests, caves and views. Easy walk, one short steep area. Directions: from 142 West, left onto Mansfield Grove Road to stop sign, right onto Hoop Pole Lane to second school parking lot on the left. From Coe Avenue take a left to Myrtle Street, right at stop sign, quick left onto Elliot Street, and right to school parking lot. For more information call Barbara 203-469-9127
