Block Island Bike Trip with New Haven Parks and Rec

Block Island Bike Trip

Saturday September, 21 2013

The  weather forecast for Saturday is just perfect and seas will be nice and calm, so the Outdoor Adventure Coordinator will lead a round trip to this wonderful gem of an island. The ride will begin at the State Street Shoreline East train station (Departs at 7:00AM, so be at the State Street station no later that 6:50AM) to the New London, where we will take the 8:30AM Ferry to Block Island. Participants will have from 9:45AM and 4:45PM (approximately) to explore the island by bike, go for swim in the Atlantic, check out lighthouses or eat at one of the restaurants on the island, most of which are centered around the harbor. Block Island is relatively small thus, seven hours is more than plenty of time to cover all corners by bike, including those areas where motor vehicles and mopeds are not allowed.

We are expecting to take the 4:55PM Ferry back to New London, the 6:35PM train back to New Haven, and arrive around 7:38PM at the State Street Station.

This ride will be on asphalt and unpaved streets, crushed stone, dirt, and sand.  Thus, it will best for mountain bikes. However it is also possible to do it on a Hybrid, or  Cyclo-cross bike if riding carefully. Participants must obey all traffic rules and be comfortable riding on streets with vehicular traffic. Bright visible clothing is preferred as well as safety lights.

Cost: $10 or $15 (trip cost) + $18 (train cost) + $65 (ferry for passenger + bike, round trip) = $93 residents/ $98 non residents. Details as follows:

•                New Haven residents: registration $10 per person includes option for guided tour of Block Island, copy of map, and snacks to be issued at the beginning of ride.
•                Non New Haven residents:  registration fee $15 dollars per person includes option for guided tour of Block Island, copy of map, and snacks to be issued at the beginning of ride.
•                 In addition, participants must bring $18 in cash to pay for the Shoreline East Train to New London ($9 each way). Since there is no ticket boot at the State Street Train Station, tickets must be purchased on board the train. Cash Only, best if you bring exact change.
•                Participants must purchase their own Ferry tickets at the dock. Round Trip  fees on the High Speed Ferry are $65 including bike fees and fuel surcharge. Cash, and credit cards Card accepted.

Optional charges:

•                Bicycle and helmet rental:  $10 per person
•                Minimum age for bike rental: 12 years of age, when accompanied by an adult.
•                Participants must know how to safely operate and ride a 21-speed bicycle
•                Frame sizes available for rental are between 13 to 21 inches.
•                All rental bikes are 21-speed mountain bikes equipped with front suspension.
•                All rental helmets are sanitized prior to each excursion.

Participants interested in renting bicycles from the Parks Department must pick up the bikes by Friday between 3:00 -5:30PM.  Bikes returned with excessive dirt or sand will be assessed an additional cleaning fee. Part Department Bicycles are not allowed to be ridden in water and/or sand.

Since we will be traveling by bike from the start of the trip, and there will be no support vehicles, riders must be self-sufficient and come prepared.  Please bring the following:

•                bicycle
•                helmet
•                two full water bottles
•                bike lock and key
•                sunglasses
•                layers of clothing, including pants and jacket
•                sunblock and insect repellent
•                spare tube for your bike and either compressed air cartridges or a compact bike pump
•                working cell phone
•                small backpack to carry food and belongings or bike pannier
•                all participants must wear helmets while riding with the group.
•                If planning to go to beach also bring bathing suit and towel.
•                Please note that this will be a full-day excursion, so bring plenty of food. Some participants may opt to buy food at a restaurant on Block Island, but some others will bring food from home to last all day.  There is also a concession stand on the ferry

Note that Shoreline East and/or Block Island Express Ferry many not allow bicycles with attached milk crates or large panniers as they take too much space. If your bike is equipped with racks and panniers, bring the panniers with you onboard the ferry.

Pre-registration is mandatory and space is limited, but there is also a minimum of 10 required for the trip to go, so that we can cover our costs.

Please specify which type of bike you will be using, tube size, and if your wheels are equipped with quick release mechanisms.

Please note- the approximate duration of the ferry ride is 1 hour  and 15 minutes, so our connection on the way back will be tight.  We are not responsible for transportation delays, but please be advised that, although we hope to make the 6:35 PM return train, we may not, and the next one is not until 8:43 PM.
