Buzzzzz: Facts About Bumblebees

We are approaching bee season. A time when bees and wasps are at their greatest numbers. This is when it feels almost impossible to eat a picnic outside for fear of being stung. For the sake of this post we are going to stay as far away from wasps as possible and instead focus on the more friendly bumblebees.

Facts About Bumblebees

They do not have ears but can feel vibrations of sounds

Feed on nectuar

Gather pollen for their young

Some may have orange or red on their body

There are more than 250 known species

A single female is responsible for the initial nest construction

Nests will hold fewer than 50 individuals

Queen and worker bumblebees can sting but are normally not aggressive

They are not useful honey producers

Buzzing comes from the vibrating of flight muscles, not the beating of wings
