When I was away at college there was one place I insisted on going when I came home for Fall Break, B.F. Clyde’s Cider Mill in Old Mystic, CT. I might be slightly biased having grown up going there every fall, but it is the best apple cider I have ever had. Clyde’s also happens to be a National Historic Landmark as it is the oldest steam powered cider mill in the United States.
Established in 1881 Cylde’s has long been a favorite of locals in southeastern Connecticut. Tourists that visit Mystic in the fall also have found that it is well worth the 10 minute drive from downtown Mystic to get a real taste of New England in the fall. Step back into history as you watch the 6th generation of the Clyde Family press apples to make delicious cider.
After watching the apples be pressed you can head over to the store to buy a wide assortment of fall foods. It will be hard to resist wanting an apple cider doughnut since the smell will greet you almost the moment you step out of your car. There are pies, breads, turnovers, kettle corn, and caramel apples to name a few.
When it comes to how you want your cider you will be given a few options. Apple cider can be bought by the gallon, half gallon, quart, apple sippy, or cup. These options all are nice and cool as often it is pumped right from a barrel into your container. If it’s a hot day you could always go with a cider slushy. In the cooler weather why not get a warm apple cider. On the weekend Clyde’s also offers tastings of their apple wines and hard ciders.
As the fall season kicks into full swing expect to wait in line to get your cider. It is well worth that wait though. Depending on your timing you may be entertained by live music or get to check out classic cars while you wait.
