Personally, when I think about New Haven food, my brain goes directly to pizza. If you ask any true New Haven foodie, they will have a definite preference on where the best pizza in New Haven is. Pepe’s and Sally’s are usually at battle for the most frequent answer, with Modern closely behind. I, however, would say without question that BAR has the best pizza in New Haven.
BAR is located in downtown New Haven on 254 Crown Street. The great thing about BAR is that their menu is very simple, just pizza toppings with the option of red or white pies, and their house salad which is made of seasonal greens, sliced pear, caramelized pecans, crumbled blue cheese and a light vinaigrette. It gives you an opportunity to be creative with combinations, and the salad can be ordered as a large bowl to share with a big group of friends.
They’re best known for their thin crust, white pizza topped with mashed potatoes. I usually add some bacon and hot peppers to that combination for a little extra punch. Some people may be hesitant, and even think it’s too crazy to ever try a mashed potato pizza, but how could you go wrong? My mouth waters just thinking about it! BAR is open for lunch and dinner but also serves as a bar, as its’ name suggests, with its’ own brewery. Try their toasted blonde! The back room has free live music every Wednesday from 9-12:30 and dancing on the weekends from 10-1am. And you can even pick up their cheese pizza by the slice after 11 for the perfect late night munchies snack.
