Setting Sailing on the Schooner Quinnipiack

Beat the heat this summer by heading out into New Haven Harbor for a boat cruise aboard the Schooner Quinnipiack. The flagship of New Haven, CT, this two-masted, 91 foot long vessel has served school children and the public since 1990. During the school year the folks of Schooner Inc. put on CT Coastal Classrooms programs, summers and vacations offer SEA Camps for kids, and then there are Harbor Adventures for us adults and kids too.

Harbor Adventures offer up many options such as Sunset Sail, Family Pirate Sail, Harbor Tour, Brunch Sail, and Harbor Science Sail. The Science Sail brings a more hands on approach to your trip. You can just sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride or you can learn more about New Haven Harbor and Long Island Sound.

For the Science Sail the crew brought some animals aboard to talk about and have a touch tank experience. We had some crabs, mollusks, muscles. Some people just sat back and listened while others held the different animals for a closer look. We also got a chance to look at a nautical chart of New Haven Harbor and discuss how it is used and what the different features were on it.

Normally visitors also get the chance to help raise the sails and learn about tying knots. Unfortunately, the day we went there was an issue with something involving the sails. The captain didn’t want to take any chances so we just took our 2 hour cruise by motor. The issue at hand was going to be addressed during the week and would be fixed ASAP.

Although we didn’t get to raise the sails and really go sailing it was still a very enjoyable time out on the water. It was a hot day inland but the breeze was just right out in the harbor. The sail gives you a whole new perspective of New Haven. Out on the water you can see the city sky line with West Rock and East Rock like bread on a sandwich. The crew was also very friendly and knowledgeable.

Schooner Inc., the company that runs the Quinnipiack, is a 501(c)(3) non-profit marine education organization. Ticket sales from the Public Sail Tickets help to support their environmental programs on-board.
