They can ruin a perfectly good picnic. Destroy a romantic sunset stroll. Worst of all, they suck your blood. Yes, the zombie apocalypse is already here, in the form of mosquitoes. We all know them, and for the most part despise them. They buzz around your head and cause you to get itchy bumps. Sometimes I feel that it is better to know your enemy, so here are some facts you may or may not know about the dreaded warm weather bug.

There are more than 3000 species of mosquitoes

Only 3 types are the main disease carriers

Average life span is 2 weeks to 6 months

Males do not have the ability to suck blood

Females use the blood as a protein source for their eggs

A female can lay 100-300 eggs

Itchiness is caused by an allergic reaction to the saliva

Mosquitoes need water to breed

They are attracted to Carbon Dioxide

Horses, cows, and birds are more popular to bite than humans

Mosquitoes cannot see you until they are within 30 feet of you

The buzz you hear is from the 300-600 wing beats PER SECOND
