On June 1st thousands of people across the country will be hitting local trails to celebrate National Trails Day. This event is held the first Saturday in June since 1993 under the leadership of the American Hiking Society. The day is meant to celebrate and promote the importance of trails in the United States. While this event takes place all over the country, Connecticut recently has led the way with the most options. It has become so big in Connecticut that the state Forest & Park Association has had to make it a full weekend event. This year there will be 259 events in 152 towns with over 560 miles of trail being featured. To celebrate 100 years of Connecticut State Parks all parking fees will be waived at any park hosting an event for the weekend.
This year staff from our stores along with our sister store, Denali, will be hosting 5 hikes around Connecticut:
1.) Branford – Amma, our Trailblazer Branford store manager, will be leading a hike at Stoney Creek Quarry/Branford Land Trust. This will be a moderate 5 mile hike that will follow the “color coded” trails that knife around the quarry and sections of the Land Trust woods. Meet just past the mailboxes on Quarry Road for a 10:00AM start. For more information or to pre-register call the store or email them at Branford@tbtalk.com. 2.) Hamden– Chris from Denali New Haven will be leading a hike at Sleeping Giant State Park. He will follow the CFPA Blue-Blazed Trail network. A highlight of the hike includes hiking up Mt. Carmel to the tower for views out to Long Island Sound. Meet inside the park’s main entrance for an 11:00AM start. For more information or to pre-register contact Chris at CMejias@tbtalk.com.
3.) East Hampton– Representing Trailblazer Mohegan Sun will be store manager Joe. Joe will be leading hikers and walkers along the Air Line State Park Trail for 6 to 8 miles. Meet up point is on the left of Smith Street(off of Flanders Road) for a 10:00AM start. For more information or to pre-register contact Joe at joeguadagni@gmail.com.
4.) Meriden - Join Rebecca from Denali Cheshire for a like up Chauncey Peak along the Mettabasett Trail. There will be nice views from the top along this 2 mile hike. 5.) Voluntown – Katie from our Wakefield Denali store will be coming over to CT to lead a hike in Pachaug State Forest along the Green Fall Pond Trail. This 4.5 mile moderate hike will traverse hills, climb over rock structures, and follow along Green Fall Pond. Meet at Green Falls Campsite for a 10:00AM start.
