Post image for Training Begins for the New England Relay

If you read my post back in January about having gone to see Hood to Coast, a documentary about the Ragnar Relay in Oregon, then you know that I signed up to run in the New England Relay, which is happening in June. We’ve finally gotten our team registered (Strangers in a Van… With Candy!) and we had our first team training this morning. Some of our team members live in other states, but we were able to get 7 of our 12 together for a quick 3.4 mile run. We all introduced ourselves and set off in the beautiful West Hartford Reservoir. Of our 12 team members, 5 of us are barefoot runners, with a couple more who seem interested in trying it out.

The New England Relay Course

For anyone not familiar, the New England Relay begins in Rhode Island and will touch every New England state before ending in Kittery, Maine. This is very exciting for me because I grew up in Kittery, and my dad and sister are running the race with me. There are 36 different legs of the race, which means that each of us has to run 3 legs of varying distances. The total number of miles per person goes from 11 to 26.2.

I’ll be blogging about our training experiences and what it’s like to be getting ready for such a crazy 220 mile race. Our next steps are to keep training and to figure out which legs of the relay we’d be most interested in running. Some of us are distance runners, some of us love running hills while others (like me) prefer shorter, flat distances… I know, I know, but a girl can dream, right? So in the next month or so, we should all have a good idea of which legs we’ll be running and we’ll be able to train specifically for them.

Check back in a couple of weeks for another training update!
