Post image for Connecticut’s Top 5 Hiking Destinations

We have so many great hiking spots in our little state, so here are just a few of our favorites.

Shenipsit State Forest

Shenipist State Forest is located in Tolland County. I’d suggest that seasoned hikers consider taking the 41 mile long Shenipsit Trail. The section that runs through Shenipist State Forest leads to the summit of Soapstone Mountain. On a clear day, from the fire tower, hikers are apt to catch photo worthy views of Massachusetts, New Hampshire and the Connecticut River Valley. I’d recommend that shutter bugs consider taking a high powered, zoom lens with them just to be on the safe side.

Wadsworth Falls State Park

Wadsworth FallsWadsworth Falls State Park is located in Middlesex County. It features several miles of summer hiking trails. I’d suggest that hikers contemplate taking the 1.5 mile long Main Trail because it connects to many other trails that may be used to create a longer hike. Trail highlights include fragrant mountain laurels, two waterfalls and views of the Cogincahug River.

Southford Falls State Park

Southford Falls State Park is located in New Haven County. It features a 2 mile long looped trail. Park highlights include views of the falls, interesting rock formations, Papermill Pond and Eightmile Brook. There is also an old fire tower, a cute covered bridge and a picnic area that is ideal for a brief, summer repast.

Lover’s Leap State Park

Lover’s Leap State Park is located in Litchfield County. It features over 4 miles of summer hiking trails. The park is also rich in history. I’d suggest that hikers consider exploring all of the trails so as not to miss a thing. The 0.6 mile long Lover’s Leap Trail offers views of the Falls Bridge and Lover’s Leap Gorge. It also connects to other trails. Park highlights include the remnants of the old Bridgeport Wood Finishing Company, Hurd Castle and the Indian Spring House.

Gillette Castle State Park

Gillette Castle State Park is located in Middlesex County. It is the home of the legendary actor and railroad buff, William Hooker Gillette. The park features a 3 mile long hiking trail that once served as Gillette’s personal railroad track. There are other hiking trails as well, some of which are steep in spots. As such, summer hikers will want to wear sturdy shoes. Park highlights include interior and exterior views of Gillette Castle and views of the Connecticut River.
