Post image for Connecticut Trail Review: Trumbull’s Old Mine Park

Trumbull’s Old Mine Park has something for everyone. Whether your a hiker or a mountain biker, beginner or expert, this place has a trail route for you to explore with options a plenty.

The trails themselves are not marked as well as some other destinations around Connecticut, but then again, you never get the feeling you are too far away from the entrance. Most of the trails form tightly together to give the feeling of exploration without that much consequence to getting lost. Sure, without some sense of direction and maybe a small map, you do pose the option to wander in circles for a long while, but never to the extent you won’t be able to find an exit or road.

For mountain bikers, this is one of the best locations in the state. Check out the video below to get an overview of what you’re in store for. If you’re a hiker, check it out just the same. It gives a great spread of the terrain and what to expect.

Like I said, there are so many options of trails to choose from, but this video shows my favorite hour long loop.

Trails: Approximately 15 mile network of singletrack trails are open to mountain biking and hiking.

Difficulty ranges: Lots of technical and intermediate sections, some easy.

"The Green Monster" - Only experts apply.

Getting to the trail: Take 91 South to exit 17, Wilbur Cross Parkway(Rt. 15 south). This changes its name to the Merritt Parkway, (still Rt 15 south). Take exit 49N onto Rt. 25 North. Then take exit 9, which is Daniels Farm Rd. Take left at top of ramp then first right. Park at the commuter lot on the left and walk to the Trailhead at the end of the road.

Wave to my friends when you go. Don’t be rude.

This past weekend, I took the plunge back into the outdoors and marched straight into West Rock Park, in New Haven, after hibernating for what was one of the toughest winters I remember ever enduring. First impressions make for lasting impressions. Until you meet the real thing. Somewhere along the line, we got it in our minds that Lassen Volcanic National Park is a blend of the moon and Yellowstone sulfur springs. Not something that lit up our enthusiasm to visit. In this case, a serious case of wrong first [...]
