Welch and Dickey

by Amy on March 20, 2013

Location: Waterville Valley,NH

Spring has sprung. Soon the snow up north will be melting and it will be time for many people to dust off their hiking boots and hit the trails. If you have plans to head up to New Hampshire a nice moderate hike to check out is the Welch and Dickey Loop. The loop hike is only 4.5 miles long but gives you some wonderful views as you pass along Welch Mountain(2605’) and Dickey Mountain(2734’). After a little over a mile of hiking you will reach one of my favorite spots, the open ledges on the flank of Welch. One of these days I am going to take a picnic lunch up there and stay all afternoon enjoying the view and the sun. From here the hike gets a bit steeper and includes some rock scrambling. It is worth your efforts because once you get to the top of Dickey Mountain you will be rewarded with views of Franconia Ridge. The trail is well marked, but can get crowded on nice summer days. I have done the hike while wearing low hiking boots and also Vibram FiveFinger Spyridons. While it is a short hike you should still carry water with you. On completion of your hike continue up route 49 and visit Waterville’s Town Square where you can enjoy a good meal and some more views.
